Did you know that the average person uses around 100 – 175 gallons of water every day? Despite how essential water is, there’s no one quite as annoyed as a person who has to spend all night in their basement fixing a burst pipe.

Fortunately, there are a few ways you can proactively maintain your pipes to make sure burst pipes never happen to you. If you want to learn how to maintain your water pipes and how to be prepared for a burst pipe, just keep reading.

  • Check the Water Pressure

  • Stop Running Toilets
  • Ensure Your Water Pipes Are in Top Shape

Pay Attention to Your Drains

If you notice any slow draining, make sure to have it looked into immediately before it causes further damage. You should also put in screens or drain covers to help keep hair, food, and other particles from going down the pipes.

Run water through all of your faucets on a regular basis to keep them from becoming blocked or clogged. Failing to pay attention to your water pipes can lead to more serious issues such as broken pipes, failure, or corrosion.

Check the Water Pressure

The ideal water pressure is between 40 – 45 psi, and anything over 70 psi may cause leaking or other plumbing damage. To check the water pressure in your home, use a pressure gauge attached to one of the outdoor faucets. Once the pressure gauge is attached, turn on the water and check the pressure.

If it is too high, you will need to adjust the pressure regulator, which can be located in the main water line near the water meter. Additionally, be sure to inspect the pipes routinely for any signs of rust, corrosion, weird noises, and leaks.

Fix Leaky Faucets

To maintain water pipes and prevent water leaks in homes, it is important to regularly inspect and maintain the pipes in your home. Start by inspecting the faucet for any signs of wear and tear that could cause leakage. Check for weak points or potential problems such as loose connections, rust, or cracked seals.

If any issues are found, replace the parts as soon as possible. It is important to have a scheduled water pipe maintenance and clean out the pipe fixtures and other components connected to the water supply. This prevents the buildup of dirt, sediment, and other materials that can lead to a clogged pipe or possible leak.

Stop Running Toilets

In order to prevent running toilets, it is important to routinely inspect pipes for any water leaks and ensure the seals are tight. This can be done by checking the joints for corrosion and checking the pipe and joint connections for any signs of wear. If any sign of leakage or corrosion is found, you may need to replace the pipes.

It is also important to ensure the valves are in good working condition and are regularly lubricated to prevent them from sticking. It is also advisable to check that the connecting seals are not cracked, damaged, or missing. If the toilet is constantly running, check the flapper and adjust the water level by adjusting the float.

Ensure Your Water Pipes Are in Top Shape

Maintaining your pipes is important in order to prevent potential water damage and waste of resources. Fixing leaks, replacing deteriorated pipes, and checking for problems regularly are key to ensuring your pipes are in tip-top shape.

With proper care and maintenance, your pipes will remain reliable and efficient for years to come. Take advantage of these guidelines to help you get started and reap the full benefits of healthy water pipes!
